How to Reset an Ebike Controller and Display

If your ebike display freezes, the motor stops responding, or an error code appears, restarting the electrical system is a sensible first step. In some cases, you may also need to clear ride data or restore the display settings.

There is no single reset procedure that works on every ebike. Controllers, displays, button layouts, and setting menus vary by brand and model. The safest approach is to begin with a basic power cycle, then use a factory reset only when the manual for your exact display confirms the steps.

What Does Resetting an Ebike Controller Mean?

The word reset is used for several different actions. They are not interchangeable.

Many riders say they want to reset the controller when they are actually trying to restart the whole electrical system or restore the display. A true controller reset is not available as a rider setting on many ebikes.

When Can an Ebike Reset Help?

A basic restart may help when the problem is temporary, such as:

• The display is frozen or not responding to buttons
• The bike behaves strangely after the battery was removed and installed again
• A communication error appears during startup
• The display shows unexpected values after a setting was changed
• Pedal assist does not start normally when the bike is first turned on

A reset is unlikely to help if the bike has a damaged battery, burned connector, broken wire, faulty brake sensor, damaged throttle, motor fault, Hall sensor fault, or failed controller.

Before You Reset the Ebike

1. Park the bike on a level surface.
2. Keep both wheels on the ground.
3. Release the throttle and both brake levers.
4. Write down any error code before switching off the display.
5. Take a photo of settings you may want to restore later.
6. Check that the battery is seated and locked correctly.
7. Look for loose, wet, pinched, or damaged cables.
8. Confirm the bike model and display version before opening a factory reset menu.

Do not open the battery, motor, or controller. Do not push metal probes into electrical connectors as part of a reset.

Method 1: Perform a Basic Power Cycle

This is the safest reset method for most ebikes. It restarts the battery, display, and controller without intentionally changing any settings.

1. Stop the bike and release the throttle.
2. Turn off the display.
3. Wait until the screen and lights are fully off.
4. If the battery has a power switch, turn it off. If the battery is removable during normal use, remove it according to the manual.
5. Wait about 30 seconds.
6. Install and lock the battery again, or turn its power switch back on.
7. Turn on the display without touching the throttle or squeezing the brakes.
8. Check whether the error code or unusual behavior returns.

If the bike works normally again, test it at low speed in a clear area. If the same problem returns, the restart did not fix the underlying cause.

Method 2: Reset the Display Settings

Some displays include a factory default option in the settings menu. This may restore units, assist levels, wheel size, speed display, brightness, or other parameters.

The button combination and menu number are not universal. One display may use a P menu, another may use a dEF screen, and another may not offer a factory reset at all.

Before using a display reset:

• Read the manual for the exact bike and display
• Photograph the current settings
• Do not change nearby advanced parameters
• Stop if the menu labels do not match the manual

Incorrect wheel size, voltage, current limit, or sensor settings can cause inaccurate readings or poor motor behavior.

Method 3: Clear Ride Data

A trip reset is often mistaken for a controller reset. It usually clears values such as trip distance, ride time, average speed, and maximum speed.

Clearing ride data normally does not:

• Restore controller settings
• Clear a hardware error
• Repair the motor or battery
• Erase the total odometer

Check the display manual before clearing data, especially if you want to keep a trip record.

What to Check If the Reset Does Not Work

1. Battery Charge and Installation

Make sure the battery is charged, fully seated, and locked. Check the battery and charger indicators. Stop if the battery or charging port is damaged, unusually hot, swollen, or giving off an odor.

2. Brake Levers

Many ebikes cut motor power while a brake signal is active. Make sure both levers return fully to their normal position.

3. Error Code

Record the exact code and note when it appears. Error codes differ by display, so use the manual for the bike rather than a generic list found online.

4. Visible Cables and Connectors

With the bike turned off, look for cut, pinched, loose, wet, or melted wiring. Do not disconnect sealed plugs unless the manual or the manufacturer asks you to.

5. Throttle and Pedal Assist

Note whether the throttle works, pedal assist works, both fail, or the motor cuts out only under load. This information helps narrow the fault to the brake sensor, throttle, pedal assist sensor, wiring, motor, or controller.

6. Motor and Controller Temperature

Let the bike cool down if the motor or controller area became unusually hot after a long climb, heavy load, or high assist use. Repeated overheating needs inspection.

What a Controller Reset Cannot Fix

A reset cannot repair physical damage or an electrical failure. It will not fix:

• A swollen, cracked, leaking, or unresponsive battery
• Burned, melted, wet, or corroded connectors
• A broken wire inside the main harness
• A brake cutoff sensor that remains active
• A damaged throttle or pedal assist sensor
• A motor phase or Hall sensor fault
• A controller that has overheated or failed internally
• A replacement display or controller that is not compatible with the bike

Repeatedly restarting the bike may make an intermittent connection appear normal for a short time, but the fault is still present.

Jasion Ebike Reset Examples

Our ebikes use different display systems across models and production versions. The examples below show the correct approach for several current Jasion models.

How to Factory Reset a Jasion X-Hunter

Our manuals for the original X-Hunter and the 2025 second version list P16 as the Restore Factory Setting menu.

1. Turn on the X-Hunter.
2. Press and hold the Up and Down buttons together to open the settings menu.
3. Press the M button briefly until P16 appears.
4. At P16, hold the Down button for 5 seconds.
5. Wait for the display to finish the reset.
6. Check the units, assist levels, and other rider settings before riding.

These steps apply to X-Hunter versions that show P16 as Restore Factory Setting. If your display or button layout is different, use the manual for your exact X-Hunter version.

Hunter Pro: Clear Ride Data or Restart the System

Hunter Pro uses a different display system from X-Hunter. Its manual provides settings P01 through P06 and a separate function for clearing ride data. It does not use the X-Hunter P16 factory reset procedure.

The ride data reset clears trip distance, ride time, average speed, and maximum speed. It does not reset the controller or erase total mileage.

If your Hunter Pro shows a controller, communication, undervoltage, brake, motor, or Hall fault, record the code and perform the basic power cycle first. Do not change P settings to clear a hardware fault. If the code returns, follow our troubleshooting guide or contact our support team.

How to Reset a Jasion X-Hunter ST

X-Hunter ST uses a different display and setting menu from X-Hunter, so the P16 procedure above does not apply.

Start with the basic power cycle in this guide. To clear trip data or adjust display settings, follow the X-Hunter ST user manual. If the display remains unresponsive or an error code returns, contact our support team and include a photo of the display, the model label, and the error code.

Other Jasion Models

Our display menus and button combinations vary by model. A reset sequence for X-Hunter should not be used on Hunter Pro, X-Hunter ST, or another Jasion ebike unless its manual gives the same steps.

If your model manual does not list a factory reset, begin with a power cycle and record the error code. Do not copy P settings, C settings, or button combinations from another ebike simply because the displays look similar.

How to Reduce Repeat Problems

• Turn off the bike before removing or installing the battery.
• Keep the charging port and electrical connectors clean and dry.
• Do not change advanced display settings unless the manual explains them.
• Do not install a controller or display just because the plugs look similar.
• Check cable routing around folding areas so wires are not pinched.
• Record recurring error codes instead of repeatedly restarting the display.

Is there a reset button on an ebike controller?

Most ebike controllers do not have a reset button that riders can access. Resetting usually means restarting the electrical system or using a display setting listed in the manual.

Can disconnecting the battery reset an ebike?

Turning the bike off, disconnecting the battery where the manual allows it, waiting about 30 seconds, and reconnecting it can restart the electrical system. It does not restore changed settings or repair damaged parts.

Is resetting the display the same as resetting the controller?

No. A display reset may restore units, assist settings, wheel size, or other parameters. It does not repair the controller or reset damaged electrical hardware.

Will a factory reset erase the odometer?

It usually does not erase total mileage, but the result depends on the display. Check the manual before resetting and record any trip data you want to keep.

Will resetting the ebike clear every error code?

No. A restart may clear a temporary startup or communication issue. A code caused by the battery, brake sensor, throttle, wiring, motor, Hall sensor, or controller will usually return until the fault is repaired.

How do I factory reset a Jasion X-Hunter?

On X-Hunter versions whose manual lists P16 as Restore Factory Setting, hold Up and Down together to open the settings menu, press M until P16 appears, then hold the Down button for 5 seconds.

Can I factory reset a Jasion Hunter Pro?
